The Global Web Finishing plow folding tower is a traditionally designed, free standing modular unit capable of folding continuous webs and/or ribbons into fully finished and usable consumer ready page formats.
GWF plow folding towers are most often positioned immediately following a ribbon deck and sequentially arranged with several folding units in tandem, terminating into the GWF H.O. Rotary cutter as the final cut off and delivery for the entire system.
GWF plow folding towers play a significant role to eliminate traditional bindery cutting, formatting and folding.
These operations are now completed during a continuous web process with the press, or from a pre-printed roll to save additional handling, time, labor and capital bindery equipment costs.
The standard GWF plow folding tower basically consists of three integrated sections beginning with the fully adjustable entrance “fold hold” section, in which the plow fold formed in the previous plow folding tower is actually creased and verified.
The “draw” section is next and, using variable speed driven draw rollers and pneumatic nip trolleys, the folded web and/or ribbons are stabilized in both lateral axis (weaving) and in the web direction (tension).
Finally the exit side of the tower creates the next fold in the “plow” section of the tower where the web can be folded in as much as one half web width or as little as .75” (19mm). The plow fold rack is essentially made up of horizontal segmented idler rollers, which supports the passing non folded web while the fold is formed by an angled, cone shaped roller.
Everything contacting the web rotates, so marking is eliminated and all axis alignments are completely adjustable to optimize quality and performance. Plow folding is a very natural process with unrestricted versatility that is quick and simple to set up and run without speed restrictions.
The GWF plow folding tower offers several areas fully suited for the gathering and folding of ribbons to create formats. It’s in the plow folding towers where ribbons are most often glued together with hot or cold adhesives.
Elemental to the plows, multi-page booklets with spine glued backbones and various page counts are created. The GWF plow folding tower is capable of folding up to several stacked ribbons of paper (subject to gauge and surface), at once.
Unique to GWF, each plow tower entry side is designed to accept a high quality driven shear slitter assembly “on demand”. The shear slitter goes where it is needed in 10 minutes or so. Numerous formats can now be produced with added flexibility, simplicity and web control.
Also unique to GWF, the plow folding towers are designed, whereas the standard basic unit is universally capable of being single level or bi-level by simple reconfiguration of plow fold and plow fold hold assemblies.
This great design feature allows a user to grow the system capacity as needs change, as well as easily opening space for portable equipment and associated web height considerations with minimal disruption.
