GWF UNIVERSAL COATER | UV COATING - PATTERN (FIXED LOCATION)
Product Overview
Just think, it has been reported many times by printers that the ability to change out coating cylinders to adjust for correct coating application volume requirement (per coating type or substrate) has saved tens of thousands of dollars on just one job. A machine with this quick change capability can pay for itself within a year by this feature alone!
The all new patent pending, GWF UNIVERSAL COATER is truly something new in our printing industry segment. Never before has an OEM put together a flexographic coater design with as much capability and flexibility. The idea comes from the need to produce the highest quality image transfer and lay down for an increasingly wide variety of UV curable coatings and varnishes on the numerous woven substrates used in offset printing.
UV cured coatings are blossoming in popularity in the direct mail and specialty print segments of the web fed industry. The magazine/catalog groups have long relied on UV coatings to enhance covers and logos bringing “pop” to their products. Whether to add the look and feel of high quality or extend a publication’s life and durability, UV cured gloss coatings truly add value.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg for magazines and catalogs as a variety of other high value added coatings in attention grabbing designs will eventually begin to appear on newsstands in prominence.
Other under utilized web print segments for specialized UV Coating applications includes high volume Direct mail and Specialty component formats. Here not just gloss enhancement is desirable but now attention seeking coatings designed to make the recipient look twice at the product.
UV curable coatings such as gloss and matte finish overprint varnishes; silicone based release coatings; scratch off coatings; coatings embedded with glitter or metallic flakes; high relief “pseudo emboss” or screen print style coatings; thermo graphic coatings; or even sheet magnet coatings.
It’s common understanding among those producing any UV curable coating that one anilox engraved transfer cylinder will never work for every coating material. In fact, each coating like requires a certain screen and volume value to be effective in quality.
Consider also the large variety of paper surfaces and “hold out” characteristics of different paper surfaces and one size can never fit all with anilox engraving. Silicone based release coatings are applied at very low coating thickness rates (.01mil - .02mil.); whereas high relief “embossing” may require 1mil or more in desired relief.

Machine Description
The key to the new GWF UNIVERSAL COATER is the wonderfully simple, “On Demand” ability to quick change the coating and plate cylinders. Quick change of the coating cylinder offers immediate selection of any pattern cell count and cell volume structure laser engraved today.
Along with high gloss and matte coatings, UV cured materials containing metallic solids, high relief formulations, silicone release coatings or even scratch off coatings can be produced in high quality from the same machine in quick order in any production sequence.
Next, the “flexo” style plate/pad cylinder uses “On Demand” change out technology as well. This allows for several special scenarios not the least of which is that the flexo plate can be photo chemically “washed” or etched to virtually any imaginable registered pattern.
The flexo plate can even be screened to carry the relatively large coating material volumes required for high relief “pseudo embossing” or other coatings imbedded with larger solids.
There are several other inherent by-products of this flexo cylinder design. First, the flexo plate is “Gapless”. Gapless virtually eliminates any cylinder bounce or coating material build up and spitting. Register is never an issue as plates are custom made to factor cylinder undercut into press repeat calculations. Eliminate the hassle and complexity of adhering flexo plates to metal plates or cylinders.
Next, GWF drives each cylinder individually and independently. This feature allows one machine to serve a large range of cutoff sizes by simply changing the plate cylinder!
Finally, the GWF design incorporates the UV curing system on board with GWF considering associated web paths required for the entire variety of coatings. Some coatings require “run out” time prior to curing, while others need immediate “out of the cylinders” curing.
Remember, the GWF UNIVERSAL COATER is completely portable and can run in any position pre or post press dryer. It can be positioned in any inline or offline finishing system and register perfectly using GWF’s built in “process-to-print” DMR registration technology.

Global Web Finishing is pleased to announce our sales support for Worldwide Graphics Corporation UV pattern coaters. WWG has a long standing reputation for building the industries benchmark product for more than 25 years.
WWG UV coating towers are installed post chills and prior to the press folder or sheeter. Typically UV coaters will produce high gloss, high quality, UV cured varnish to web fed magazine and catalog covers for high speed applications.
Similar to GWF gluers, WWG UV coaters print from “flexo pad” cylinder arrangements. The WWG coater is comprised of three main sections: coating, curing, and chills. |
 |
The WWG coating section uses a closed chamber doctor blade cavity to deliver coating material to an anilox engraved transfer cylinder. A magnetic cylinder carries a metal backed photochemically engraved “flexo pad” blanket which can be etched for any repeat pattern to offer images registered to match specific print images.
Immediately following coating, the web enters the curing section. High efficiency UV lamps in sequence, typically using 2 to 4 lamps depending upon speed, cure the coating through UV light wave lengths. The lamp sections are purpose designed, with refined air cooling systems and all necessary safety features. The curing section is a fixed location part of the integrity and support structure of the entire unit.
After curing section exit, the web enters the variable speed chill drum section of the machine. Typically two large diameter water cooled drums will set the coating, remove excess heat from the web, and position the web in a tension ready situation for the press delivery. |
